Invisalign Q & A
Invisalign in Washington D.C.

Invisalign is method of straightening teeth that uses clear aligners made of polyurethane plastic. Unlike traditional metal or clear braces, that are cemented or bonded in place, Invisalign aligners are removable. This gives them versatility and allows more flexibility so you can continue to enjoy day-to-day activities like eating or brushing. Invisalign aligners are clear, allowing them to remain discreet. Some other advantages of the Invisalign system include:

  • Esthetic appearances while in treatment
  • Improved Oral Hygiene
  • Teeth-Grinding Protection
  • More Dietary Choices
  • Comfort
Invisalign works in a similar manner as traditional braces do by using a controlled force to move the teeth into a better position. Specialty computer software helps the initial design for the plan to move your teeth back into proper alignment. This movement is broken down into several steps. At each step, you get a set of plastic aligners, one for your top teeth and one for the bottom. These aligners, depending on the case, could be worn for a few weeks to about 2 years, for up to 20 hours a day. With each set of aligners in the series, gradual moving of the teeth is accomplished until they’re correctly positioned.

How do I care for my teeth with Invisalign?

One of the benefits of using the Invisalign system is that it’s flexible enough to allow the trays to be removed so they can be cleaned easier. You’ll need to brush your teeth regularly, and after each meal or snack, so that food and plaque don’t get stuck in the aligners. The aligners will also need to be cleaned on a regular basis to keep them free of microbial buildup. You can clean them by brushing and then rinsing the aligners with gentle warm water. To get the best benefits of your new smile, you should follow the recommended instructions from Dr. Kindred and wear your retainers exactly as prescribed once your treatment is completed.
