What are the benefits of dental crowns?

Even with proper dental hygiene, normal wear and tear on your teeth can cause them to weaken over time. They become more vulnerable to damage such as discoloration, cracks, and tooth decay. While regular fillings and bonding can deal with more common forms of tooth damage, a crown may be required when it has become severe enough. At Kindred Dental, we can place dental crowns on your teeth to restore your smile, bring back the function of your teeth, and protect it from further damage.
In our office in Washington D.C., we use a crown to cover a damaged tooth that cannot be restored by other means. It also protects the tooth from further damage. It can be made from several materials, such as gold and porcelain fused to metal. If you’re like most people, you’ll probably want to use porcelain, which we can easily make to look natural. We will carefully mold its shape and match its color with the rest of your teeth so that it blends in perfectly.

How it's done

The process starts with your first visit to our clinic, where we will assess the state of your teeth and determine if a crown is necessary. We will apply a local anesthetic to make you comfortable, and then we will shape the tooth so that it can hold the crown securely. Once the tooth is in the right shape, we will make an impression of it and of the other teeth as well. You will end the first visit with a temporary crown on the affected tooth so that any changes are preserved and protected.

Meanwhile, we will send the dental impression to our laboratory where the crown will be made. We’ll use the impression to make sure that the crown fits perfectly in your tooth. This process takes about 2 to 3 weeks.

When the crown is completed, you can come for your second visit. Again, we apply some local anesthesia so that you won’t feel any pain at all. We then put dental cement on the area and then we will carefully install the crown in it proper place.

Once that’s done, you can leave our clinic with perfect-looking teeth. Any imperfection such as fractures or serious discoloration will be covered up. The crown will seal any serious cavities that regular fillings can’t fix, so that further damage can be prevented.

In other words, we will restore your damaged tooth so that it will look natural and you can get your beautiful smile back. You can also use your teeth again to chew food properly. With proper brushing and flossing, your new crown can last for at least a decade before it needs to be replaced.
